# Copper RFID prototype on NanoPaper

A printed copper antenna, low-temperature soldered chip attachment, and a successful reader response.

## What we built

A UHF antenna was printed on Tangho NanoPaper™ with copper ink, then fitted with a surface-mount RFID component using low-temperature solder. An external reader detected the completed tag and displayed its identifier on a computer.

## Materials and equipment

- **Substrate:** NanoPaper sheet, used as received and supported flat for printing.
- **Conductive ink:** Copprint LF-360 copper ink, used without dilution or formulation changes.
- **Printer:** Voltera NOVA, using direct ink writing.
- **RFID component:** Murata LXMS21ACMD-220.
- **Thermal equipment:** an oven and a TLC 5500T thermal laminator with its original motor.

## Print and process the antenna

The antenna geometry included continuous conductive paths and defined pads for the RFID component. It was deposited in a single printing pass.

Direct ink writing of the antenna with Copprint LF-360 copper ink on a Voltera NOVA.

1. **Dry the print.** The assembly report records oven drying at 80 °C for approximately 2 minutes, or until the solvent had visibly evaporated.
2. **Process through the heated rollers.** Copper-ink processing was demonstrated using a TLC 5500T laminator at a 200 °C setting, with an estimated cumulative residence time of approximately 30 seconds across six passes.
3. **Apply the subsequent oven step.** The recorded sequence then used 140 °C for 2 minutes before component attachment.

The laminator estimate is cumulative time in the heated zone across six passes. The 200 °C value is the equipment setting, not a measured sheet temperature or a continuous hold. The oven steps above describe this experiment.

## Attach the component and read the tag

After processing, continuity of the printed antenna was checked. Low-temperature solder paste was applied to the copper pads, the Murata component was positioned, and localized heating formed the connections. The completed assembly was then presented to the reader.

The observed result is a successful reader response from the assembled prototype. The completed experiment record does not specify the solder alloy or measured joint temperature, so these are not presented as a repeatable soldering profile.

## A supporting substrate comparison

A related study used the same copper ink, antenna pattern and processing sequence on NanoPaper, polyimide and PET. The tested PET film showed visible deformation; the NanoPaper sample retained its printed antenna pattern.

This is a visual comparison of the tested films. Dimensional change was not quantified, and these photographs do not compare RFID read range.

## What to evaluate next

For an application trial, tune the antenna to the intended reader and operating conditions, then measure read distance, repeated-read performance and connection reliability. Bending, humidity and aging tests should evaluate the complete printed and soldered construction.
